Big Bear, Catalina – 12/28/2011

Flying in a perfect day, blue skies, fantastic weather condition to Big Bear and Catalina island.
Even though I’m flying in So Cal for last 2 years, but I never had the chance to fly to L35 (Big Bear) or KAVX (Catalina).

One of the friends who owns a very nice 152 offered me the ride. The journey starts from KEMT (El Monte) with direct flight to Big Bear at 9500. We arrived Big Bear in -5 C in the morning around 8:45 AM. The breakfast was nice and after refueling we took off direct heading to KAVX at 10500. Arriving to KAVX and landing there is interesting experience for any pilot.

Just right when we were ready to took off, we witnessed a crash right at KAVX. The 172 landed with no landing gears, pilot forgot to put down the landing gears. The pilot was a 30 year veteran pilot on a fully loaded 172! So how this happened or what caused the chain of the errors is still not known.
Due to this accident, we were grounded in Catalina for over an hour. After reopening the runway, we took off and headed back to KEMI.

  1. That is probably the nicest 152 I’ve ever seen. And what a great example of what California has to offer. You flew to a ski resort for breakfast, then out to an island in the pacific where you took pictures of cacti. Very nice.

  2. Hey Patrick, Had so much fun that day. Lets go up again whenever you have time.
